UC Law SF Board Chair Thomas F. Gede '81 Elected to the American Law Institute
Thomas F. Gede ’81, Chair of the UC Law SF Board of DirectorsThe American Law Institute (ALI) has elected Thomas F. Gede ’81, Chair of the UC Law SF Board of Directors, to join its membership. Gede is one of 41 new members announced by the ALI this week, a group of individuals who “bring a wide range of perspectives and areas of expertise to ALI’s work of clarifying the law through Restatements, Principles and Model Penal Codes.”
“It is essential to ALI’s process that each of our projects includes members who are at the top of the legal profession and diverse in every way,” said ALI President Roberta Cooper Ramo. “We rely on our members’ unique perspectives to create discussion that produces balanced work that clarifies the law. It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome these newly elected members to ALI and our law reform projects.”
Gede is a Principal in Morgan Lewis Consulting, where he assists clients in sensitive high-profile matters involving state governments. He is also Of Counsel at Morgan Lewis & Brockius LLP, where he represents clients in complex governmental matters in litigation, administrative and regulatory proceedings. A former senior deputy in the California Attorney General’s office, he was amicus coordinator and Supreme Court counsel, and argued cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court, and numerous state and federal appellate courts.
“This ALI membership affords me a remarkable association with many distinguished experts in their fields,” says Gede, “all of whom are dedicated to the improvement, clarification and simplification of the law and the administration of justice, as well as in furthering the very best in scholarship.”
Mr. Gede has also testified before Congress on American Indian and Native Alaskan issues, and has served for several years as an Adviser to the ALI project on the Restatement of the Law Third, The Law of American Indians. In 2012 he was appointed by Speaker John Boehner to serve on the United States Indian Law and Order Commission, where he examined criminal justice issues in Indian country and Alaska, resulting in the issuance of an important report to the President and Congress.
“Having worked in the field of American Indian law for more than 25 years, and having served as a Commissioner on the federal Indian Law and Order Commission, I am humbled to be recognized for my work and honored to be elected to the ALI,” says Gede. “As an active member, I hope to continue providing assistance to the team working on this important project. Unlike the Restatement of Torts or Contracts, this new Restatement is being written ‘from scratch,’ calling on the creativity and judgment of the team crafting what will become an important publication for the bench and bar.”
“UC Law SF is very fortunate to benefit from Tom Gede’s leadership as the Chair of our Board of Directors,” says UC Law SF Acting Chancellor & Dean David Faigman. “Tom’s dedication to legal education is extraordinary and his contributions to the furtherance and improvement of the law have been most impressive. With his experience and perspective, Tom will be a valuable addition to the American Law Institute’s membership.”
