Gig economy 101—Labor law expert Veena Dubal breaks down on-demand realities at Ars Live.
Host Cyrus Farivar from ARS Technica kicked off the live event on Gig Economy 101 by asking Professor Veena Dubal, “I came to this bar in a Lyft, should I feel guilty about that?” Thus began the more than hour-long interview of Professor Dubal where she “delivered” on educating viewers about the gig economy.
Professor Dubal discussed everything from the May 2018 California Supreme Court ruling in Dynamex v. Superior Court of Los Angeles County (which essentially switched the burden of proof of workers proving they’re employees to companies now having to prove plaintiffs are not employees), to the astounding fact that she has never used an Uber or Lyft.
“I started researching this type of work with taxi workers before Uber or Lyft existed, and I’ve seen what [ridesharing]’s done to their livelihoods. So I prefer regulated labor,” says Professor Dubal.
