Mapping Out Corporate Liability for MeToo Offenders
UC Law SF showcased its quality of alumni events in Southern California on cutting-edge legal issues with a discussion on the topic of “MeToo Movement: The Corporate Fall Out,” featuring two prominent alumni representing distinct interests in the bankruptcy litigation of the notorious Weinstein Company case.
The many alumni in attendance, and hundreds more following live on Facebook, were treated to insight from Jennifer Hagle ’87, Partner at Sidley Austin LLP, a top gobal full service firm that represents the senior secured lenders, and James Stang ’80, Partner at Pachulski Stang Ziehl & Jones LLP, one of the nation’s leading corporate restructuring boutiques that represents the official committee of the film studio’s unsecured creditors (including abuse survivors). Professor Jared Ellias, Faculty Director of the Center for Business Law at UC Law SF, moderated the interactive speaking event that covered a range of topics affecting the bankruptcy, from “key man” and “toxic man” provisions, to the corporate structure of Hollywood production and distribution companies, to figuring out from what sources the tort claimants might recover.
James Stang, a veteran of the Catholic Church Chapter 11 cases and in determining how a corporation is liable for the actions of a church, graciously hosted the event at the Los Angeles office of Pachulski Stang. He also provided valuable analysis of the information already made public in the Weinstein matter, including the extent the Weinstein Co. attempted to shield itself from potential liability from any wrongdoing by Harvey Weinstein in their agreements with other companies.
UC Law SF has a strong alumni community in Southern California with events throughout San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles that connect the more than 4,100 grads living and succeeding in these areas.
