La Raza Pens Statement of Support for BLSA and the BLM Movement
Hola Raza,
Esperamos que ustedes y sus familias se encuentren en buena salud.
La Raza Law Students Association at UC Law SF stands in solidarity with the Black Law Student Association (BLSA) and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Botham Shem Jean, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin and the countless other individuals who have been murdered by police, sheriffs or racists. We stand united with our black brothers and sisters against violent, systemic racism and oppression. It is our obligation to fight the corrupt and racist system that underpins the foundation of this country that has created and perpetuated police brutality against black communities. It is important that we take concrete action to recognize, acknowledge, and educate ourselves about the oppressive tools that have systematically affected the black community in particular.
Our organization was founded on the values of equity and unity. Thus, it is our responsibility as an organization to condemn actions that threaten the lives of black individuals within the Hastings community and throughout the country, while actively engaging to put a stop to it. Additionally, we acknowledge that La Raza’s past, present, and future members include Afro-Latinx individuals who have faced and continue to face discrimination. We, your La Raza familia, stand with you against this bigotry.
It is our duty as people of color, and given our privileged positions as future attorneys, judges, activists and political figures, to use our voices and NOT remain silent. We will be active allies and work towards ending an oppressive system that bears down upon black individuals throughout the United States and worldwide. To our current members and alumnus, we encourage you to reflect, organize, and mobilize in your communities. We ask that you have conversations with your “familia” about George Floyd and why Black Lives Matter. And individually, act when you see verbal and behavioral indignities against our Black communities. We hope you will donate your time and money to support this movement, not just now, but for the long haul. To our Black brothers and sisters, we mourn with you, stand with you, and will advocate with you.
