Developing Essential Skills

Since 2019, CCEP has helped students develop the essential skills needed to become practice-ready attorneys. They closely observe how in-house attorneys collaborate with their corporate clients and learn to tailor legal advice to align with the client’s mission, business goals, and industry context.

Clinical Professor and Director of Externship Programs Nira Geevargis works with students in a seminar to get the most out of the Corporate Counsel Externship Program.

“The Corporate Counsel Externship Program is a privilege to be a part of — we work with phenomenal students who care deeply about their work and uplift each other in our seminar, where we cover everything from contract drafting to reflective practice,” said Nira Geevargis, Clinical Professor and Director of Externship Programs. “I am honored to teach alongside my incredible co-professor, Scott Darling, whose practical insights and steadfast mentorship inspire our students and strengthen their learning experience.”

Chief Legal Office at Upstart Scott Darling connects with students who say the Corporate Counsel Externship Program was the highlight of their law school experience.

Darling, Chief Legal Officer at the fintech company Upstart, witnesses the impact of the program in the classroom and in the tech industry. “Every semester several students from the class tell me that this was the most rewarding experience they had in law school,” he said.

The experiential learning is reinforced and enriched through classroom instruction. Students enroll in a weekly seminar that explores the role of corporate counsel, essential lawyering skills, and the ability to self-develop and learn from practice.

For at least 12 weeks, supervising attorneys provide training, feedback, and mentorship, guiding students as they navigate the complexities of corporate legal practice.

“We are also grateful for our dedicated supervisors, who not only support our students but become longtime partners in our program,” Geevargis said. “Students have the opportunity to do cutting-edge, impactful work and gain firsthand experience working in-house, navigating the dynamic intersection of law and business. Witnessing these game-changing opportunities for our students is truly an honor and a career highlight for me as a professor.”

Lasting Partnerships with Bay Area Businesses and Non-Profits

CCEP externs benefit from the College’s strong connections to businesses throughout the Bay Area. Stitch Fix, a personal styling service, has partnered with UC Law SF to offer CCEP placements every spring since 2020.

CCEP has provided great mentorship opportunities for our legal team, and has even served as a pipeline for identifying and hiring top talent,” said Joanna Patty, Director of Legal, Product and Commercial at Stitch Fix.

Kerry Moller ’21 first served as a CCEP extern at Stitch Fix in 2020, laying the groundwork for her to eventually be hired as an in-house attorney in 2024. “CCEP has been invaluable to my career. It provided excellent hands-on training, helped me identify my career interests, and even led to a job opportunity with my placement years later,” said Moller, who now serves as Legal Counsel, Product and Commercial at Stitch Fix.

Through organizations like the University of California, Office of the President (UCOP), Kaiser, and Wikimedia, students can get an inside look at in-house practice for non-profit organizations.

Principal Campus Counsel at UC Berkeley Andrew Houston ’07 praises the Corporate Counsel Externship Program for fostering professional growth and enhancing key legal skills.

“As an attorney at UC Legal, I can confidently say that the Corporate Counsel Externship Program at UC Law SF offers invaluable experiences for law students,” said Andrew Houston ’07, Principal Campus Counsel at UC Berkeley. “This program bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world practice, allowing students to immerse themselves in the complexities of practicing in house.”

UCOP oversees 10 campuses, five medical centers, and three affiliated national laboratories, allowing CCEP students to examine a variety of legal issues related to the system.

3L Jasmine Williams participated in UC Law SF’s Corporate Counsel Externship Program, which places students in top legal departments.

Third-year law student Jasmine Williams gained a stronger grasp of financial and legal structures in her externship at UCOP.

3L Jasmine Williams had the opportunity to collaborate with multiple transactional teams as a UCOP extern. “This work impacts thousands—possibly even millions—of students like me. It plays a vital role in shaping the policies and decisions that impact the entire UC system,” said Williams.

After the externships are completed, students walk away with the confidence and skills to succeed in their careers.

“The externship not only enhances their legal skills but also fosters professional growth, networking opportunities, and a deeper understanding of the in-house legal landscape. We are proud to partner with UC Law SF in shaping the next generation of legal professionals through this dynamic and impactful program,” said Houston, who is a member of the UC Law SF Board of Directors.
