Tarek Massarani

Bio

Upon graduating from Georgetown Law, Professor Maassarani investigated federal interference into climate science, practiced public interest and international human rights law, taught undergraduate human rights advocacy courses, and published on a variety of human rights related topics. In the last decade, Professor Maassarani shifted towards youth empowerment, peace building, restorative justice, and social justice work both locally and abroad in ways that include nonviolent action and advocacy; initiating, designing, and managing projects; facilitating group dialogue, accountability, and reconciliation processes; and resourcing others on the front lines through training, consulting, networking, and other support. Professor Maassarani’s recent projects include piloting a partnership with DC survivors’ organizations to provide restorative options in cases of sexual harm, building local capacity to engage violent inter-group conflicts in West Africa, furthering racial equity and reconciliation in a variety of religious and social justice communities, and supporting student groups and administrations address the spill over of the crisis in the Middle East on university campuses.. Professor Maassarani currently runs two sustainability and resilience focused construction start-up tech companies, aside from ongoing restorative justice casework.

Professor Maassarani holds a Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University’s School for International and Public Affairs, a J.D. from Georgetown University, as well as a B.S. in Environmental Studies and B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in conjunction with the University of Cape Town.
