Visiting Professor John Myers is an authority on child abuse and domestic violence. He has written fifteen books and more than 100 articles and chapters on child maltreatment, domestic violence, evidence, criminal law, and family law. Professor Myers’ writing of child abuse has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court, and nearly 200 other courts. He has given more than 400 presentations on maltreatment across America and abroad.
In addition to teaching and writing, Professor Myers practices law. He represents abused and neglected children in juvenile court, victims of domestic violence in family court, and clients in divorce and international parental child abduction cases.
Following a four year tour of duty as medic in the U.S. Navy, Professor Myers entered the University of Utah, where he graduated in 1973, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and Phi Kappa Phi, with a B.S. in sociology. He attended law school at the University of Utah, where he served as Managing Editor of the Utah Law Review, and graduated Order of the Coif.
After law school, Professor Myers was a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, in Washington D.C., a rural poverty lawyer for Utah Legal Services, and Legal Director of the Legal Center for the Handicapped in Salt Lake City. For thirty-five years, Professor Myers taught evidence, family law, community property, criminal law, criminal procedure, and juvenile courts at the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. He began teaching at Hastings as a Visiting Professor in 2017.
