New Faculty: Welcoming Nationally-Renowned Health Law Scholar Tim Greaney

SAN FRANCISCO (UC Law SF) — University of California Hastings College of the Law and the UCSF/UC Law SF Consortium on Law, Science & Health Policy are delighted to welcome nationally-renowned health law scholar Professor Thomas L. (“Tim”) Greaney.

“Professor Greaney has been an invaluable collaborator and friend to the Consortium for many years,” said Professor Jaime King, Associate Dean and Co-Director of the Consortium, “most notably as an Advisory Board Member on the Consortium’s Source on Healthcare Price & Competition project. We are thrilled to welcome Professor Greaney to our growing health law faculty here at UC Law SF!”

“UC Law SF had the great tradition in the latter half of the Twentieth Century of hiring top national scholars after they retired from their home institutions — the famous 65 Club,” added Acting Chancellor & Dean David Faigman. “Although the 65 Club is no longer active — and we’ve been supremely successful in attracting nationally recognized scholars at every level of their careers — Tim Greaney is very much in the tradition of the vaunted 65 Club. I am absolutely thrilled to welcome him to our community.”

Professor Greaney will be a tremendous asset both as a colleague and teacher. Along with UC Law SF faculty Rob Schwartz, Greaney is co-author of the nation’s leading health law casebook, Health Law: Cases, Materials and Problems, as well as a treatise and hornbook on health law. He has published over 60 articles and chapters concerning antitrust law and health care law and policy, is regularly cited in the media, and has testified as an authority in these areas before the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives, the Federal Trade Commission, and the U.S. Senate.

Before joining UC Law SF, Professor Greaney was the Chester A. Myers Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Health Law Studies at Saint Louis University School of Law. Prior to joining the SLU Law faculty, he served as an Assistant Chief in the Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, specializing in health care antitrust litigation, and completed a visiting professorship at Yale Law School. He has also been a Fulbright Fellow studying European Community competition law in Brussels, and has been a visiting scholar at Université Paris Dauphine in Paris, Seton Hall University, and the University of Minnesota. Professor Greaney was named Jay Healy Health Law Professor of the Year by the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics in 2007. He received his B.A magna cum laude from Wesleyan University and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.

Professor Greaney will join UC Law SF in Fall 2017.
