Amit Kurlekar

Bio

Amit Kurlekar graduated with a BA in Philosophy & Religious Studies from Stanford University in 1998, and received his JD magna cum laude and as a member of the Order of the Coif from the University of Michigan Law School in 2001. While at Michigan, he served as an associate editor on both the Law Review and the Journal of Gender and the Law, and was a semifinalist in the University’s Campbell Moot Court Competition. After law school, Amit clerked for two years for the Hon. Judge Marianne O. Battani of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and then the Hon. Julio M. Fuentes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Newark, New Jersey. After his clerkships, Amit was an attorney in the New York and San Francisco offices of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP for over 9 years, where he worked as part of the firm’s appellate practice group and served on the firm-wide Pro Bono Committee. He is now a Deputy Attorney General in the Appeals, Writs and Trials section of the California Attorney General’s Office, which handles criminal appeals. Amit lives in Oakland with his wife, their 7-year-old and 5-year-old daughters, and their two cats. He has been teaching LRW at Hastings since 2011.
