The Center for East Asian Legal Studies was pleased to organize a robust schedule of 11 public events during the 23-24 academic year. More than 290 in person and 275 virtual participants joined events on a diverse range of topics, from legal approaches to managing tensions in the South China Sea to international commercial dispute resolution in East Asia. Of particular note, the Center hosted an international symposium on the open government movement in Japan to recognize Senior Professor Setsuo Miyazawa’s retirement from active teaching duties, and collaborated with the UCLA Anderson Forecast and the UC Law SF Center for Business Law on a panel to explore the impact of geopolitical tensions with China on U.S. technology firms. The Center was honored to host former Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative and Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Glen S. Fukushima for a discussion of U.S. trade policy in East Asia and International Arbitrator and Mediator Sally A. Harpole for a fascinating overview of China’s legal reform trajectory.
