Summer Legal Institute

Each summer UC Law SF offers classes in a variety of subject areas. All in-person courses are taught at UC Law in San Francisco, adjacent to federal, state, and local courthouses, San Francisco City Hall, and many of the city’s leading law firms.

The credit-bearing courses are open to any J.D. student currently enrolled and in good academic standing at an ABA-accredited law school and to UC Law SF JD, LL.M., MSL, and CSL students. When selecting online classes, UC Law SF JD students should bear in mind Academic Regulation 1204, which imposes distance education caps per semester (in this case, applicable to the entire summer) and in total toward the JD.

July 2024 Bar Exam Certification

The 2024 Summer Legal Institute (“SLI”) classes are not likely to have grading completed in sufficient time for students enrolled in summer classes who are short a few units to be certified for the July 2024 administration of the bar exam. If you need to take a summer class in order to have enough credits to graduate, you should plan on preparing and sitting for the February 2025 bar exam. The one exception is Negotiation, which is taught and graded on an accelerated schedule.

VA Students: Pay careful attention to the start and end date for the semester (as well as online courses) as this might affect your VA benefits for the summer.

Exam Schedules & Information

The summer midterm and final exam information and exam schedules are posted on the Registrar’s office’s Midterm and Final Exam Sharknet page (requires UC Law SF single-sign-on access).  All students complete their midterm and final exams using ExamSoft’s Examplify exam software. All bar courses offered during the Summer semester will have in-person, closed book exams. This includes Business Associations, Civil Procedure 2, Constitutional Law 2, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, and Legal Ethics: Practice of the Law.  Please direct any exam questions to the Registrar’s Office at registrar@uclawsf.edu.

Costs

The tuition for all credit-bearing 2024 summer courses is $1,760.00 per credit, so a three-unit course will cost $5,280.00. The tuition is the same for all students, regardless of California residency status or nationality. U.S. citizens, U.S. Permanent Residents, and other eligible non-citizens attending other ABA-accredited law schools can use federal financial aid funds for summer courses provided they are taking a minimum of three credits. UC Law SF students can find more information on applying for loans here. Students of other ABA-accredited law schools should contact the Financial Aid Office at their school as summer loans are administered through the home school.

Important: Please note that you must attend at least half-time (3 units in summer) to receive a federal student loan.

***Payment is due on the first day of classes, May 14, 2024, by 3pm.
