UC Law San Francisco & Bucerius Law School Summer Program in Licensing Transactions in Intellectual Property
The Bucerius / UC Law SF Summer Program in Licensing Transactions in Intellectual Property is an intensive, three-week, English-taught program for upper division students and young practitioners. The program, taking place from July 1 – July 19, 2024 in Hamburg, Germany, is organized jointly by the Center for Transnational IP, Media and Technology Law and Policy of Bucerius Law School and UC College of the Law, San Francisco, United States, and is offered in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Designed to impart practical know-how and skills required for cross-border IP license transactions, the program explores theory, doctrine, and current problems with an international academic faculty representing multiple legal systems. Participants receive an overview of core concepts of IP law (patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets, as relevant to licensing and extracting value from IP assets) and explore industry-specific licensing and deal making strategies.
In addition to the fundamentals of EU and U.S. intellectual property regimes, program lectures will give special focus to:
IP License Drafting Principles
Legal and Business Aspects of Licensing
Competition and Exhaustion Doctrines as Limitations on Licensing
Cross-Border Licensing Problems
Algorithmic and Cloud-Based Licensing
IP issues arising in Blockchain, AI, and Digital Content Licensing
The program culminates with two intensive days of workshops, where students will apply the concepts explored during the program to a simulated license negotiation. Students work in teams, under the guidance of IP practitioners from major law firms, to negotiate the terms of a complex international license agreement.
Two site visits in Google and Airbus facilities in Hamburg provide you with an opportunity to see current practice in industry and gain insight into international licensing strategies via discussion with corporate legal teams. On-site workshops and in-depth discussion with corporate attorneys and executives provide firsthand insight into current industry strategy and international licensing practice.
Students
UC Law SF students will earn 4 units of course credit. Because the Summer Program is not separately approved by the American Bar Association, law students from other ABA-accredited law schools will need to follow procedures at their home institution to receive credit for study. The Summer Program will provide each student with a documentation packet to assist in obtaining academic credit at their home institution. European students may earn a total of 10 ECTS credits.
Practitioners
UC Law SF is an approved provider of California MCLE, and attorneys licensed in California may satisfy their three-year Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirement (other than Legal Ethics, Prevention / Detection / Treatment of Substance Abuse or Mental Illness, and Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession) by completion of the Summer Program. Attorneys licensed in another state should consult their bar to determine whether California MCLE programs may be used to satisfy their CLE requirements. The Summer Program will issue a Uniform Certificate of Attendance to assist attorneys licensed outside California in obtaining CLE credit.

Testimonials
- “From an employer’s standpoint, Bucerius Law School’s new practice oriented IP summer program is most welcome, as it provides potential hires with skills and experience that are often lacking in law school education.” – Dr. Jan Meents, Managing Director, Sectors and Clients, DLA Piper
- “The practicability of the program was its best asset and the hands on-approach during studies is appreciated among employers as well. I believe the course was playing an advantageous role when I was chosen to work for the licensing department of Microsoft.” – Miina, Finland
- “There are few better ways to spend your summer if you are looking for a place to build a network, gain practical experience, and explore a new city and country. The IP program offers a particularly interesting mix of hands-on experience, industry lectures, and international engagement. Meeting classmates from outside of the United States really put into perspective the importance of IP to the international community and to so many around the world. I also really enjoyed the tour of the Airbus facility in Hamburg and the simulated negotiation exercise at the Google office in Hamburg. Both provided an in-depth look at industry leaders and how we as lawyers can help build their already successful businesses. I cannot recommend the Bucerius summer program enough and hope you take the opportunity to learn at a first-rate law school.” – Phil, United States
