Prof. Dorcas Quek Anderson presents: The Impact of Communication Modes on Negotiation Outcomes

September 11 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Hybrid Hybrid Event

Presented by the Center for Negotiation & Dispute Resolution (CNDR) and The Mediation Society (TMS).

Does it matter where we resolve our dispute?

What research tells us about the impact of communication modes on negotiation outcomes:

Remote dispute resolution, like remote work, has been growing in popularity. Negotiations and mediations may be conveniently conducted with virtual communication tools such as Zoom and Slack. Mediators face a plethora of choices in choosing the appropriate communication channel: face-to-face, videoconferencing, audio calls, text messaging, or a combination of several modes. The wealth of options begs the pertinent question of how dispute resolution outcomes are impacted by different communication modes.

Drawing from a recently published article, this presentation highlights the salient research findings on this issue and suggests implications for mediation practice. It will also share preliminary findings from a study involving 400 undergraduate students participating in negotiation simulations across four different communication modes. Conducted in Singapore, a multi-cultural society, this study provides valuable perspectives concerning the impact of communication mode on economic outcomes such as value creation, as well as process outcomes including procedural justice, rapport, and satisfaction levels.
