Payment Deadline and Late Fees
- The payment deadline for all tuition and fees is always 3:00 pm on the first day of classes for all semesters. Thus, the payment deadline for the Spring 2025 semester is Monday, January 6th, by 3:00 pm PST.
- Failure to pay tuition, fees, and any other outstanding balance by the deadline will result in a late fee of $250 and a hold on the student’s record.
- Failure to pay tuition, fees, and any other outstanding balance by 3:00 pm on
Wednesday, January 8th, 2025 PST will result in an additional $400.00 late fee and
the student will be administratively withdrawn from classes for non-payment.
UC Law SF does not have an installment payment plan for tuition and fees. Thus,
partial payment is insufficient to avoid being dropped for nonpayment. - Students who are administratively withdrawn for non-payment will be considered for reinstatement once all tuition, fees, and any outstanding balance are paid in full. Please see UC Law SF – Drop for Nonpayment & Late Fee Payment Deadline for more detail.

Drop for Nonpayment and Late Fee Payment Deadline Policy
The UC Law SF Drop for Nonpayment & Late Fee Payment Deadline Policy is intended to encourage students to enroll and pay tuition, fees, and any outstanding balance on a timely basis. This Policy allows UC Law SF (“UC Law SF” or the “College”) to effectively manage enrollment and registration and provides clear information to students about their financial obligations and the consequences for non-compliance. Additionally, this Policy ensures that students have access to essential support services and resources from the very first day of instruction.
Fall and Spring Terms
Payment Deadline | What’s Due | Failure to Pay by Deadline Consequence |
---|---|---|
3 p.m., 1st day of the term (first day of classes/instruction as published in the Academic Calendar) | Tuition and Fees | $250 non-refundable fee assessed. |
3 p.m., 3rd day of the term | Tuition, fees + $250 late fee | $400 non-refundable late fee assessed. |
3 p.m., 2nd Monday of the term | Tuition, fees + $650 late fee | Student will be dropped from classes. Their registration will be canceled and they will be placed on an administrative leave of absence for the term.* |
* Student may be eligible for reinstatement; see conditions below.
Financial Aid Implications
- If a student has timely applied for federal aid and the failure to timely pay tuition and fees is caused solely by the untimely disbursement of federal aid, such student is not subject to late fees or being dropped for nonpayment. However, the student must complete and submit a deferment form by the tuition deadline, which is 3pm on the first day of the term.
- A student who intends to apply for financial aid but does not do so by the deadline or fails to complete the required financial aid process, including “accepting” sufficient federal loan funding (if this is their intention), by the deadline must pay tuition and fees out-of-pocket or will be dropped for nonpayment.
- If a student pays out-of-pocket and later receives financial aid to cover the balance of tuition and fees, they will be refunded the amount paid out-of-pocket.
Restatement Conditions
- If a student has been dropped for nonpayment but pays all tuition, fees, and outstanding balances within seven days of being dropped, the Office of Fiscal Services will notify the Dean of Students, who will authorize such student to be reinstated (i.e., moved from an inactive to an active student status) for that term and deemed eligible to enroll in classes.
- There is no guarantee that students who are dropped for nonpayment will be able to register for the same classes in which they were initially enrolled; reinstated students may only register for classes with seat availability.
- Under no conditions would a student be allowed to enroll or re-enroll in a course if the student missed an excessive number of classes or the late add would be unduly disruptive to the class.
- The College will not accept payment after seven days of the tuition deadline, which means that the student will be foreclosed from attending UC Law SF for that term once the seven-day period has passed. Partial payment is insufficient to support reinstatement.
Administrative Leave of Absence
- Students who are dropped for nonpayment, placed on an administrative leave of absence, and not reinstated for that term will not be liable for that term’s tuition, fees, or late fees.
Future Term Enrollment and/or Leave of Absence Extension
- Students who have been dropped for nonpayment but who are otherwise eligible to continue as a student at UC Law SF may register for courses in a future term but must pay any outstanding balance prior to being allowed to register for the next term of courses. Failure to pay all tuition, fees, and any outstanding balance by the payment deadline of the future term will again result in being dropped for nonpayment and placed on an administrative leave of absence for a single term.
- A leave of absence for an additional term must be requested and approved. Students who do not affirmatively request a leave of absence will be placed on an administrative leave of absence by the College.
Summer Term
The following payment deadline applies to the Summer Legal Institute Session.
Payment Deadline | What’s Due | Failure to Pay by Deadline Consequence |
---|---|---|
3p.m. on the 1st day of the summer session (first day of classes/instruction as published in the Academic Calendar) | Tuition | Student will be dropped from classes, and their registration will be canceled.* |
* Student may be eligible for reinstatement; see conditions below.
Consequences for Failure to Pay Summer Tuition by the Deadline
- The payment deadline for the summer term is 3 p.m on the first day of the summer session in which the student is enrolled, i.e., the first day of classes/instruction indicated on the Academic Calendar. Failure to pay tuition by this deadline will result in the student being dropped from classes, which means that the student is prohibited from attending all classes and the student’s registration for that summer session(s) will be canceled. UC Law SF does not have an installment payment plan for tuition and fees. Thus, partial payment is insufficient to avoid being dropped for nonpayment.
Financial Aid Implications
- If a student has timely applied for federal aid and the failure to timely pay tuition and fees is caused solely by the untimely disbursement of federal aid, such student is not subject to late fees or being dropped for nonpayment.
Reinstatement Conditions
- If a student has been dropped for nonpayment, such student may be able to re-register but must pay all tuition immediately upon registration.

Tuition and Fees FAQ
The amount you pay (less the applicable enrollment deposit) is fully 100% refundable up until the first day of classes. Thereafter, the refund amount will be determined in accordance with the College’s refund schedule.
You need to ensure that your financial aid is received by UC Law SF by the first day of classes. You can verify your loan status by contacting the Financial Aid Office at 415.565.4624.
“Estimated financial aid” is the estimated amount of financial aid you are expected to receive for the noted semester. This information is provided to you so you are aware of the amount you are expected to receive. “Estimated financial aid” does not mean your tuition and fees have been paid. Your tuition and fees will be paid when your financial aid is received and no longer shown as “estimated financial aid”.Financial aid, including scholarships, grants and loan funds, will not be released until all required documents have been received and approved and until your enrollment status requirements have been met. The actual amount received will be less than the estimated aid due to the deduction of lender fees. Information about your loan disbursements can be found by contacting the Financial Aid Office at 415.565.4624. Contact Fiscal Services at 415.565.4704 if you have any questions regarding your tuition and fees charges.
Contact the Office of Financial Aid by the first day of classes to receive a Tuition and Fee Deferred Payment Agreement. Once this has been received and signed, forward it to the Fiscal Services Office. If the delay is the result of your lender’s error, you may be granted an extension by which to pay the balance due.
*Fee Deferment
In certain instances, Financial Aid proceeds do not arrive in time to meet the tuition and fee payment deadlines of UC Law SF. Students who have received certification for Fall or Spring financial aid but anticipate the availability of the proceeds to be too late to pay tuition and fees by the payment deadline must submit an approved deferred payment arrangement by 3:00 p.m. on the first day of classes for all semesters.
To request a deferment, fill out Sections A and B of the Tuition and Fee Deferred Payment Agreement and read the terms and conditions. This form will then be automatically routed to the Office of Financial Aid to complete Section C, and then to the Office of Fiscal Services for final approval in Section D. The requesting student will receive a copy of the final agreement once all parties have signed. Students will not be assessed a late fee provided the completed form is received by the first day of classes for Fall and/or Spring by 3:00 p.m.
Yes. However, if you are denied residency you should be prepared to pay the non-residency fee on the date your

- CASH IS NOT ACCEPTED FOR ANY REASON OR PURPOSE.
There are several factors which may cause the balance due for the semester to change:
1. Financial aid proceeds – As you accept your financial aid package, the estimated amount of financial aid will be posted as a credit or a payment against your tuition and fee charges. This will cause your balance due to be reduced.
2. California residency classification – Students charged as non-residents and must file a petition to the General Counsel Office for the California residency. Once the California residency petition is approved, the non-resident tuition charge will be reversed.
3. Health insurance waiver – If you wish to waive the insurance, you must submit an online waiver. Once the waiver is approved, the health insurance premium will be reversed.
Yes. You can pay with E-Check, Visa, Master Card, Discover, or American Express using Self-Service. Beginning July 1st, 2023, UC Law SF will implement a non-refundable service fee of 2.95% on all transactions made via credit card/debit card. This change aligns our fiscal policies with credit card fee practices throughout the University of California system. UC Law SF is happy to provide students with various options for paying for tuition and fees. However, those choosing to pay with a credit or debit card for tuition and fees, apartment rent, and other charges billed through Self-Service must pay a 2.95% service fee that covers the cost to the College of processing such payments. Paying with an eCheck does not incur any additional costs. Contact the OFFICE OF FISCAL SERVICES at 415-565-4704 if you have further questions.
