Bio
Adjunct Professor Schmidt currently works as an Assistant District Attorney in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office prosecuting child and sexual assault cases.
From 2013-2017, he worked as a counsel at Ropes & Gray’s LLP, specializing in white-collar criminal defense.
From 1995-2013 Professor Schmidt worked as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for the Northern District of California. As an AUSA, he worked on a range of matters, including matters involving securities violations, mail, wire, and bank fraud, Foreign Corrupt Practice Act (FCPA), and False Claims Act (FCA). At the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Professor Schmidt served in various supervisorial roles including as a supervisor in the Major Crimes section, and the Anti-Terrorism unit. From 2003-2005, he took a detail to serve as an international prosecutor in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s new State Court. There, he investigated and tried the Court’s first war crimes case. Jonathan received DOJ’s Director’s Award for Superior Performance for his work in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Since 2001, Professor Schmidt has served as a mediator and early neutral evaluator for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California’s Alternative Dispute Program.
He also serves on the boards of Outward Bound California and Zyzzyva.
