Matthew Kumin
Adjunct Professor of Law
Bio
Matthew Kumin has practiced law, mainly as a litigator, since 1995, focusing on civil rights and constitutional law. His career in law took a sharp turn soon after voters in California liberalized cannabis in 1996. Colleagues successfully inspired him to turn his civil rights and constitutional knowledge towards defending the rights of medical cannabis patients and ending cannabis prohibition. Momentously, he found himself litigating on the cutting edge of this emerging sector, challenging federal tax laws and federal criminal laws, and fighting against cities and counties bent on banning cannabis in their jurisdictions.
Named a Super Lawyer for his work in the cannabis sector, Matt returned to his roots, focusing again on employment and civil rights law, in 2017. He also taught hundreds of law students beginning in 1984 and remains passionate about teaching. He first taught legal research and writing at UC College of the Law San Francisco in the late 1990’s and looks forward to returning to the classroom.
